The Al-Taqwa Learning Center will shine a positive light on Islam and our high standard of learning for all to see. The new building will feature many amenities, such as a rooftop garden and play area, a multi-purpose center that can be used as an assembly hall, gymnasium, and cafeteria, computer labs, men’s and women’s fitness areas, a spacious kitchen, classrooms and more.
Al-Taqwa Learning Center will not only have an inviting exterior, but the inside will be a welcoming, safe place for our children to study and play.
provides an inspiring, safe and sound learning environment for our precious children.
Middle School is a trying time for inner-city youth. This is when they become exposed to gangs, drugs, and other harmful influences. We want our students to have a secure educational setting where, praise Allah, they are guided by Islamic principles.
Al-Taqwa Learning Center will challenge students to study, succeed, and live our faith. Our students will become models for our neighbors as solid citizens, scholars, and Muslims.
Our high school will have a lot to offer to young men and women on their ways to adulthood, careers, and college.
The school’s multi-purpose center will feature a gymnasium, assembly hall and cafeteria, with a fully-equipped kitchen.
Al-Taqwa Learning Center will promote good health. Our students will enjoy a huge indoor gymnasium for playing basketball, tumbling, and other sports. Men’s and women’s fitness centers provide more options for exercise. Our cooks will prepare nutritious, halal meals in the cafeteria to
ensure our students will have the energy and strength they need to study hard.
One of the real beauties of this building is that no area is unused. Al-Taqwa Learning Center will boast a garden, an outdoor children’s play area, a Nikah area, barbecue patio, and a solar-energy system – all on the roof! It will be in credible!
The green roof over the classrooms and offices will contribute to the insulation and improved air quality, helping lower urban air temperatures and combat the heat island effect.
The building will incorporate many different functions being serving as a school. The project team decided to design not only a school but a religious complex for various social activities and mutual aid. This strengthens the idea of coming together as a community with cultural and social activities.
As the building is situated in a humid climate, it is appropriate to benefit from the rain water and solar properties of the area for a more sustainable usage. Solar panels installed on the roof of the assembly hall serve as an additional medium for water heating.
For the vegetable garden, which aims to support the community, corn, onions, and potatoes were selected since they are easy to cultivate in this climate and in this geography and because they require less water to grow. The products from the garden can be used to prepare meals for those who are in need in the community and can be dispatched in the “soup kitchen” which is integrated to the mosque complex.
As for the materials chosen for construction, the project team suggests using materials with recycled content. Together with the reused materials, the project teams consider the importance of using of using paints, adhesives, and sealants that that feature low chemical emissions for the sake of the environment. The use of local materials for construction and the interior design minimizes the energy spent for transportation thus contributes to the sustainability goal of the project while also favoring the development of local industry.
Estimated Cost of Construction: $3,800,000.00.
This is an ambitious project, to be sure. While $3.8 million might seem like an enormous amount of money to invest in what is now seen as a downtrodden section of town, the City of Kansas City and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has already begun construction of a $30 million revitalization project. Known as the Paseo Gateway Project, it consists of five new residential projects offering apartments, townhomes, shops, art studios, and a community center. This is an area that will receive a lot of attention from progressive elements of society. The Al-Taqwa learning center will be the premier educational center in the district. This is an opportunity to set a shining jewel of Islam and of our community for all the world to see.
Our children are our future in this country where many of us have come as immigrants. They deserve to learn the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed here, while maintaining their faith and culture. This new school will give them that.
We have a magnificent opportunity now. Please consider giving generously to make our school and expanded mosque a reality. May Allah bestow his blessings on you.
